What is the difference between Infrared and traditional saunas?

To start with, an infrared sauna is not actually a sauna. It is simply a dry box/cabin with a heat source. In a traditional sauna, there is always a heater with rocks on top for the specific purpose of generating löyly, which is the steam produced when water is thrown onto the hot rocks. Without the presence of löyly, the experience does not align with the traditional sauna concept.

That being said, the difference with the type of heat in each is that:

  • infrared emits a wavelength of light that your body heats up to, without significantly warming the surrounding air
  • a traditional sauna heats up both the air and the walls around you. It also provides the option to incorporate löyly by allowing you to throw water on hot rocks, tailoring the level of steam to your preference
  • infrared heat usually only heats the surrounding air to around 45-65 celsius
  • a traditional sauna will heat up the sauna to about 90 celsius
