New: wood-burning saunas

Wood-Burning Saunas in Ontario

Custom built to code and WETT inspected

Built the same way as our electric saunas. The difference is the heat comes from a real wood fire.

Starting at around $28,000 + HST, delivered and installed.

The Same Ryt Saunas Build, Now With a Wood Fire

Ryt Saunas now builds custom wood-burning saunas in Ontario. Until now we have only built electric saunas. Our new wood-burning designs are built to meet the codes a WETT inspector checks, with proper heat shields, non-combustible materials and a quality insulated chimney system. Every one comes with a WETT inspection report.

Everything that makes our electric saunas work in a Canadian winter carries over. The insulated walls, ceiling and base, the roof, the fully draining aluminum floor and the panel construction are all the same.

Only a few things change: the heater, the non-combustible wall around it, the chimney, the railing around the heater and the space between the heater and the railing. Because every sauna is built in panels in our Pickering shop, the non-combustible heater wall is built properly into the sauna from the start, not added on site.

Your sauna is delivered in panels and carried to the spot, so there is no crane or forklift to pay for. Wood-burning and electric saunas are built in the same queue, so lead times are the same.

Inside Our Wood-Burning Trailer Sauna

These photos are from a wood-burning trailer sauna we built for our partner company, Suomi Mobile Saunas. The inside of your wood-burning sauna will look very similar, depending on the model you choose. The non-combustible walls, heater and chimney will look much the same.

The heater in these photos doesn't have the built-in water tank, but a heater with a stainless steel water tank is also an option.

Custom Wood-Burning Saunas, Built Around You

Every wood-burning sauna we build is custom. There are many options, and we would rather talk with you and build your sauna exactly how you want it than overwhelm you with a catalogue. A few examples:

  • Choose the heater’s feed direction. Load the stove from inside the sauna or from the outside.
  • Choose your heater. Our Fenno wood-burning heater comes with or without a built-in stainless steel water tank for hot water.
  • Same upgrades as our electric saunas. Nuewal siding, tongue and groove interior wood, door styles and the other upgrades on our Pricing & Options page, apart from the electrical packages, are available on wood-burning saunas too.
  • Add windows. Bring in natural light and a view.
  • Go bigger. Your sauna can be built larger to suit your space and your group.
  • Add a deck, porch or change room. Build out the space around your sauna.
  • And much more. Tell us what you have in mind and we will design it with you.

What a WETT Inspection Really Means for a Wood-Burning Sauna

Wood-burning saunas are not like electric saunas, and it pays to understand the difference before you buy.

An electric sauna heater is tested and certified as a product. To our knowledge, there is no equivalent product certification in Canada for a complete wood-burning sauna. Safety depends on how the heater, heat shielding, walls and chimney are installed. That is why a WETT inspection matters.

WETT stands for Wood Energy Technology Transfer. WETT trains and certifies people, not saunas or stoves. A WETT-certified inspector checks that a wood-burning installation meets Canadian codes, including the correct clearances to combustible materials, proper heat shielding and a safe chimney system, and writes up the results in a WETT inspection report. Many insurers and building officials ask for one before they will accept a wood-burning appliance.

Every Ryt Saunas wood-burning sauna is built to meet the codes a WETT inspector checks. That means real heat shields and non-combustible materials where they are needed, not shortcuts. Each sauna is inspected in our shop by a WETT-certified inspector, and you receive the WETT inspection report confirming it is built to code. We arrange and pay for the inspection, so it is one less thing for you to organize.

Questions to Ask Any Sauna Builder

Before you buy a wood-burning sauna from anyone, ask:

  • What are the clearances between the heater and the combustible walls, and how are they achieved?
  • Do you use non-combustible wall sections and proper heat shields?
  • What chimney system is used, and is it insulated with a spark arrestor?
  • Will I get a WETT inspection report, and who arranges and pays for it?
  • Will my insurance company accept the installation?

We are happy to answer all of these for you.

Built Properly, Insurable, and Built to Protect Your Property

A wood-burning sauna that is not built properly is a fire risk. If it burns, it can take other property with it, such as a deck, a garage, or the home it sits next to, and an insurer may refuse to cover the loss.

We build ours properly so you do not have to worry about that. Our designs follow the clearance, shielding and chimney requirements that WETT inspectors check, and you get the WETT inspection report your insurer is likely to ask for. We recommend confirming coverage with your own insurance provider before you buy, and we will gladly provide the details your insurer needs.

Quality Insulated Chimney with Spark Arrestor

The chimney is the most important safety component of a wood-burning sauna, so we do not cut corners. Every installation uses top-quality insulated chimney components with a spark arrestor, which keeps outside surfaces cooler and helps prevent sparks from escaping.

A Heavy-Duty Heater, Built Locally by Finnish Craftspeople

Our wood-burning heater is a heavy-duty unit designed for years of daily use. It is made by Fenno, a Finnish company that builds its heaters in Markham, Ontario, and knows what a traditional sauna should feel like. It has a deep fire chamber, a heavy cast iron grate and an ash tray for easy cleaning, and it gives the soft, steady heat Finnish saunas are known for, with plenty of löyly when you throw water on the rocks.
